Antique Artistry - Edwardian Sterling Silver Irish Bog Oak Earrings. These wonderful earrings are crafted from sterling silver( tests sterling silver), and brass. Featuring genuine Irish bog, Edwardian/Art Deco styling, and quality craftsmanship. These unique earrings have a modernistic feel, yet they are antique. They have their original brass fittings, which were most likely attached to brass screw backs. At some point sterling silver wires were attached for pierced ears. They are made from 5000 year old Irish bog oak in a beautiful articulated design. The earrings are black, and designed with graduated rings, which resemble the orbit. These Edwardian era earrings have a modernistic, yet exotic feel to them... rare, stunning, and oh so versatile! Don't pass these beauties up!
Comments: Memorizing design, and light on the ears, which makes then comfortable to wear.
History: Bog Oak is dug from the Great Oak Forest that covered a large area of Ireland four to six thousand years ago. When these Oak Trees fell into swamps, they later turned into bogs, the chemistry of the bog reacted with the wood, preserved and transformed it with its unique colour and shapes.
The story of silver mining began about 5,000 years ago. Silver was first mined around 3,000 BCE in Anatolia, now located in modern-day Turkey. The precious metal helped early civilizations in the Near East, Ancient Greece to flourish.
The sterling alloy originated in continental Europe and was being used for commerce as early as the 12th century in the area that is now northern Germany. A piece of sterling silver dating from Henry II's reign was used as a standard in the Trial of the Pyx until it was deposited at the Royal Mint in 1843.
