Luminous - Vintage Gold Plated Pearl & Crystal Rhinestone Ring. This pretty ring is crafted from gold plate over metal. The ring features two simulated round pearls, 6 crystal rhinestones, vintage era styling, quality craftsmanship. The gallery on this ring is set with two beautiful luminous white pearls, which are adorned by sparkling rhinestones. The ring exhibits a wonderful texture on the gold called barking, since the carving looks like bark. The shoulders are tapered, and the shank is smooth and polished, which allows for a comfortable fit. This vintage ring is unique, and looks lovely when worn.

History: Originally, rhinestones were rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine, hence the name, although some were also found in areas like the Alps (the source of the Rhine). Today the name "rhinestone" applies only to varieties of lead glass known as crystal glass.

Two forms of faux pearls were manufactured in Italy, the earliest, produced from at least the 13th century, and hailing from the ingenious glass workshops of Venice, were imitation glass pearls. Some of these pearls were apparently made from an intriguing mixture of powdered glass, snail slime and egg white.

The technology behind gold plated jewelry is credited to Italian chemist Luigi Brugnatelli. In 1805, he discovered the process for electroplating. It was quickly adopted for jewelry styles, with many Victorian jewelry pieces using gold plating.
