Colour Change Treasure - Estate Sterling Silver Lab Created Alexandrite Filigree Ring. This gorgeous ring is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 for sterling. Featuring a round cut faceted lab created alexandrite, exquisite designing and quality silver work. The expertly claw-set alexandrite has a vibrant purple colour, displaying a gentle colour change to a purple blue colour in different light intensities. The setting has an attractive octagon shaped bezel with delicate detail, whilst the shoulders of the ring add beauty with its delicate filigree and engraved work. The shank is smooth and polished for a comfortable fit. This Edwardian Revival Estate piece looks stunning when worn, truly a perfect gift or addition to any jewelry collection.
The controversial history of alexandrite dates back to Imperial Russia, where it was first discovered in emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in the Ural Mountains. Its Finnish discoverer initially mistook it for emerald before realizing it changed colors under different light sources.
Alexandrite is an expensive gemstone because it so rare and production has always been limited. For years, the only source for alexandrite was Russia.
Silver's history is long. The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
