Heart Of Gold - Vintage 12K Gold Filled Opal Heart Filigree Pendant & 14K Gold Chain. This pretty pendant is crafted from 12K Gold Fill (hallmarked 12K GF), whilst the chain is crafted from 14K gold, hallmarked 14K. The pendant features one natural oval opal cabochon gemstone, vintage styling, and quality workmanship. The gallery on this pendant showcases a beautiful white opal, displaying color variations in different light intensities. The frame of the heart exhibits delicate filigree work, and a fluted decorative bale. The chain is a rope design, and features a secure spring ring in perfect working order. This vintage pendant and chain would make a very sentimental gift for that special someone. 

History: The early Greeks believed the opal bestowed powers of foresight and prophecy upon its owner, while in Arabian folklore, it is said that the stone fell from heaven in flashes of lightning. To the Romans, it was considered to be a token of hope and purity. Ancient Romans provided the first real market for opal.

Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

Over time, however, this rolled gold became “filled” with a base metal, such as brass, thus gold filled with brass. The modern gold filled wire and sheet metal technique was discovered in 1817 by John Turner, an Englishman, who patented his discovery.

Gold-filled can last for years as long as it is cared for. The gold layer is thick so gentle rubbing shouldn't wear it out even by the closures. If it does need to be cleaned, use a soft toothbrush and soap to gently clean it.
