Mariposa - Vintage Sterling Silver Abalone Butterfly Brooch. This gorgeous brooch is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 Sterling, Mexico. Featuring genuine abalone, and quality craftsmanship. This brooch is created in the form of a butterfly set with beautiful abalone shell. There are a rainbow of colours in the abalone, displaying a luminous finish. The butterfly has lovely little features too, such as the sterling silver attennae. The back of the brooch is polished and smooth with a pin and rollover lock mechanism in perfect working order. The Vintage butterfly looks stunning when worn,. Just wonderful!

Abalone shell pieces are found in Indian middens along the coast of California, showing that this was a common food item for hundreds of years. Asians harvested abalone in California during the 1800s and early 1900s. Most of this was done intertidally in the late 1800s. and then by diving in the early 1900s.
