This estate necklace is weighty, and beautifully made by the craftsman of Bali, Indonesia. Truly a wonderful statement piece to be enjoyed for many years to come.

History: Bali, a small island in Indonesia, is widely known in the jewelry world as the home of the world's best gold and silversmiths. When viewing the art and design of a specific culture, one must consider the land the people reside on: its plants, animals, and natural surroundings; and the peoples' customs and beliefs.

From exquisite filigree work to ornate metalwork, Balinese artists use traditional techniques to produce jewelry that is both visually striking and spiritually profound. Balinese jewelry is often made of precious metals like gold and silver, as well as semi-precious stones like turquoise, coral, and amethyst.

Ancient Greeks and Romans believed this gemstone could ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus and keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. English regalia were decorated with amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolize royalty. Amethyst jewelry has been found and dated as early as 2000 BC.

Silver was discovered after gold and copper about 4000 bce, when it was used in jewelry and as a medium of exchange. The earliest known workings of significant size were those of the pre-Hittites of Cappadocia in eastern Anatolia.

By about the 12th century in England, silver coins were called "Easterlings," a word later abbreviated to "sterling." In 1300, King Edward I made the definition official by declaring that sterling silver had to be 92.5 percent pure silver and should be marked by "guardians of the craft."
