Sweetheart - Vintage 10K Gold Engraved Heart Locket Pendant & 14K Gold Fill Chain. This lovely locket is crafted from 10K gold, hallmarked 10K. The chain is 14K gold filled, hallmarked 1/20 14K GF. The locket features vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. The pretty locket is heart shaped, and exhibits exquisite delicate diamond cut engravings of a flower and etched border. The locket is plain on the back with a perfect polished finish. The bail is tapered and delicate, however sturdy enough to support the locket. The inside of the locket opens and closes nicely, with the perfect 'click' sound we like to hear once closed shut. The locket looks wonderful with the chain, and features a spring ring clasp in perfect working order. This vintage locket would make a perfect gift for that special someone, or addition to any fine jewelry collection.

History: Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

Lockets evolved from ancient amulets. European designs for lockets appear to date to the 16th century, when small pendants were worn to conceal good luck charms, small fabric squares soaked in perfume to ward off the poor smells on public thoroughfares, painted portraits, and even, on occasion, poison.
