History:
In mythology, topaz is portrayed as a gem of peace and healing. It was first found by the Romans over two millennia ago on the Island of Topazios in the Red Sea. They believed it could protect its wearer from enemies and bring reconciliation.
The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
Symbolism and Meaning: Gemstones often carry symbolic meanings, and Sky Blue Topaz is no exception. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this gemstone is believed to represent clear communication, inner peace, and a connection to spiritual realms.
Two varieties of treated blue topaz have become dominant. These are known as “Swiss Blue” and “London Blue” topaz. Swiss Blue is a bright blue topaz with a light tone and light to moderate saturation. London Blue is a dark blue topaz with a moderate to dark tone and saturation.
Swiss blue topaz has a brighter and more vibrant color and is the result of heat treatment of pale or grayish-blue topaz stones. London blue topaz is the darkest and most valuable shade and its color is the result of natural or irradiation-induced coloration.
The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.
Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
