Taxco Adornment - Vintage Signed TAXCO Sterling Silver Green Onyx Bracelet. This gorgeous bracelet is hand-crafted from 925 sterling silver, hallmarked and signed Taxco, Mexico,  Featuring 3 genuine rectangular shaped green onyx gemstones, 3 genuine triangular carved green onyx gemstones, vintage Mexican tribal styling, and quality craftsmanship. This substantial bracelet showcases ornate segments, which are interspaced by rectangular green onyx gems, and green onyx carved mask gemstones. The side of the masks showcase dainty dangly earrings. The segments are joined by secure pins, which gives the bracelet flexibility, and allows the bracelet to sit on the wrist perfectly. The bracelet has a smooth and polished finish on the inside and a hidden slide and lock clasp. This vintage bracelet looks wonderful when worn, and adds a wonderful tribal flair to any jewelry collection. 

History: Green onyx is more than just a pretty face. This semi-precious gemstone is also considered to possess physical healing properties. It was used by both ancient Greek and Roman soldiers to protect them during battle.

The story of silver mining began about 5,000 years ago. Silver was first mined around 3,000 BCE in Anatolia, now located in modern-day Turkey. The precious metal helped early civilizations in the Near East, Ancient Greece to flourish.

The term "sterling silver" probably originated in eastern Germany when five towns formed the Hanseatic League in the 1100s. These town minted their own coins of 92.5 percent silver. When Britain sold cattle and grain to the League, they were paid in "Easterling coins".

The people who lived in the area now known as Taxco were using silver long before the Spanish arrived in the Americas. They mined silver and used it to make gifts for Aztec gods and for other ceremonial purposes. The Aztecs used silver for jewelry too, and Aztec jewelers were incredible craftsmen.

The place was a mining centre in pre-Columbian times. The Indian settlement (Tlacho), together with the settlement founded by the Spanish in 1528, became the city of Taxco and was one of the first early mining centres to be inhabited by Spaniards.

All of the silver jewelry that we sell is made by local Taxco artisans from silver – plata – that was mined in the Taxco de Alarcón region of México. This colonial city lies in the north of the state of Guerrero, about 100 miles southwest of Mexico City.

It started in the 1920s, when an American named William Spratling moved to Mexico after befriending and working with Diego Rivera. As an architecture professor and artist, Spratling was fascinated by pre-Colombian and Aztec art, and used it as inspiration for his silver jewelry designs.
