Vintage Elegance - Vintage Gold Plated Crystal Rhinestone Brooch. This elegant brooch is crafted from gold plate. Featuring numerous crystal rhinestones, vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. This vintage brooch is linear in form with a gentle curve. It is adorned by channel-set crystal rhinestones and expertly claw-set larger rhinestones on the ends of the brooch. There is also a lovely herringbone pattern on the top of the brooch and a very pretty engraved pattern on the profile of the brooch. The pin on the back locks into place with a secure rotary lock, which is in perfect working order. This vintage piece would make a perfect addition to any vintage jewelry collection.

History: Origins. Originally, rhinestones were rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine, hence the name, although some were also found in areas like the Alps (the source of the Rhine). Today the name "rhinestone" applies only to varieties of lead glass known as crystal glass.

The technology behind gold plated jewelry is credited to Italian chemist Luigi Brugnatelli. In 1805, he discovered the process for electroplating. It was quickly adopted for jewelry styles, with many Victorian jewelry pieces using gold plating.

Brooches developed from the Roman clasp, or fibula, similar to a safety pin, in regions that had been part of the Roman Empire. In the severe climate of northern Europe, the brooch became the characteristic ornament because it routinely functioned as a fastening for a heavy cloak or tunic.
