Greener Than Green - Vintage Signed 'Titan Sterling' Gold Plate Over Sterling Silver Emerald Green Crystal Rhinestone Screw Back Earrings. These pretty earrings are crafted from gold Plate over sterling silver, hallmarked TITAN STERLING. Featuring two round shaped faceted crystal rhinestones, and vintage classic styling. These lovely earrings are claw-set with a sparkling emerald green crystal rhinestones, and a pretty swirl surround. The earrings are for pierced and non pierced ears, featuring the original screw back earring backs. The vintage earrings would make a perfect gift or addition to any costume jewelry collection.
History: Centuries ago, quartz pebbles with a high lead content were found sparkling on the banks of Europe's Rhine River. These beautiful, natural stones were highly coveted and were eventually depleted, inspiring jewelers to create an imitation, aptly named the "rhinestone."
Silver Mining in History. The story of silver mining began about 5,000 years ago. Silver was first mined around 3,000 BCE in Anatolia, now located in modern-day Turkey. The precious metal helped early civilizations in the Near East, Ancient Greece to flourish.
The term "sterling silver" probably originated in eastern Germany when five towns formed the Hanseatic League in the 1100s. These town minted their own coins of 92.5 percent silver. When Britain sold cattle and grain to the League, they were paid in "Easterling coins".
The first known gold plating occurred in northern Peru, where Pre-Columbian smiths gilded and silvered copper pieces by electrochemical replacement techniques. During excavations in the late 1980s, archaeologists discovered gold and silver ornamental and ceremonial artifacts dating all the way back to AD 50-300.
Vintage costume jewelry, including pieces marked "Titan Sterling," gained popularity from the mid - 1920s to the 1970s or 80s. Sterling silver was sometimes used in costume jewelry during the World War II era due to metal restrictions on the private sector.
