Victoria's Reign - Victorian 14K Rose Gold Natural Garnet 'Taille D'Epargne' Black Enamel Dangly Earrings. These wonderful earrings are crafted from 14K rose gold, tested. They feature two natural round cabochon garnets, Victorian era styling, and high quality craftsmanship. These Victorian beauties are comprised of carved shell motif surmounts, which suspends a beautifully carved bow. The bow is adorned by a deep red garnet cabochon gemstone. Dangling from the bow is another segment, which is decorated with beautiful black 'Taille D'Epargne' enamel tracery. There are also 3 precious petite rose gold dangles, which are suspended from small loops. These earrings are beautifully articulated in such a way that it allows the earrings to have movement and sway. They are for pierced ears, featuring shepherd hook backings. These Victorian era earrings exude character, and would make a very special addition to any antique jewelry collection.

The history of garnet dates back to the Bronze Age, more than 5000 years ago. Its name, which has been used since these ancient times, was derived from the Latin word granatium, which means pomegranate (because the small, red crystals were thought to resemble pomegranate seeds). ... Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

The rose cut originated in the 1500's and was commonly used through the Georgian and Victorian eras. Like other antique diamond cuts, they were cut by hand and meant to dazzle under candlelight. Their large, wide facets performed exquisitely in low light conditions.

Rose gold was first used in early 19th century Russia by the famed jeweler Carl Faberge in his famous Faberge Eggs, as was known as Russian Gold. Rose gold later gained popularity in the United States during the lavish and feminine 1920's, and was worn in engagement rings and fine jewelry.

Taille d'épargne is a jewelry enamelling technique specifically a type of champlevé, where fine lines are engraved into metal and then filled with opaque enamel, often black.  It translates to "saving cut" from French. This technique was popular in the mid-19th century, particularly during the Victorian era and was often used on mourning jewelry.
