Ode To Jane Austen - Georgian English 18K Gold Rhodolite Garnet Hand-Carved Scroll Ring. This lovely ring is crafted from 18K yellow gold, hallmarked 18CT and 750 (British hallmark for 18K gold ). Featuring a natural fancy cushion cut faceted garnet, Georgian Era styling. and quality craftsmanship. I am proud to offer this exquisite ring, which was completely hand made and looks as though it came out of a Jane Austen novel.  The gallery is expertly claw-set with a beautiful red garnet, displaying reddish/ purplish hues (a colour found in rhodolite garnets). The shoulders of the ring feature deep engravings of scrolls. The back of the band is plain, which allows for a comfortable fit and makes it easy to size if desired.  This rare Georgian era ring is truly a treasure to be cherished and enjoyed for many years to come.

Note: Contemporary Appraisals do not reflect the value of antique jewelry. It is recommended that this ring be insured for $1200.00 CD (Tax Excluded)

The history of garnet dates back to the Bronze Age, more than 5000 years ago. Its name, which has been used since these ancient times, was derived from the Latin word granatium, which means pomegranate (because the small, red crystals were thought to resemble pomegranate seeds).

Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

Rings before 1850 were completely handmade, gemstones were hand cut, only using tools to make these treasures. Machinery was not used until after 1850.

Rhodolite garnet is a variety that is intermediate in composition between almandine and pyrope and is typically pink to purplish-red in color. These raspberry pink garnets were found in North Carolina in the late 1800sand were named rhodolite because the color resembled the blossoms of the local rhododendron plant.

When John Benjamin from the British Antique Roadshow was asked what his recommendation was for people to collect , his answer was Georgian rings. Here is a lovely example of one.

The Georgian era was a period in British history from 1714 to c. 1830–1837, named after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV. The definition of the Georgian era is also often extended to include the relatively short reign of William IV, which ended with his death in 1837.
