Lustrous & Elegant - Vintage Silver Plated Champagne Faux Pearl Necklace Strand. This pretty necklace is crafted from silver plate over metal. Featuring numerous pearls (simulated), and vintage classic styling. This lovely necklace is hand strung with beautiful champagne coloured pearls, displaying pinkish overtones. The pearls are hand-knotted with silk thread, which protects each pearl from rubbing against each other. The necklace features a slide-and lock type clasp, which is in perfect working order. The pearls are very good quality, and display a beautiful lustre and weight, as genuine pearls do. This vintage necklace would make a perfect wedding or special occasion necklace.

History: Two forms of faux pearls were manufactured in Italy, the earliest, produced from at least the 13th century, and hailing from the ingenious glass workshops of Venice, were imitation glass pearls. Some of these pearls were apparently made from an intriguing mixture of powdered glass, and egg  white. Faux pearls(simulated pearls)are made up of glass, ceramic, shell or plastic to give them the appearance of real pearls. This faux pearl is often painted and covered in a material that simulates a pearl-like luster and false iridescence. Faux or simulated pearls are man made.

The process was invented in 1805 by Italian chemist Luigi Brugnatelli who plated a very thin gold layer on top of silver. Since then, it has become commonplace in the jewelry world, with many base metals covered in gold, silver, or rhodium.
