Ocean Starlight - Art Deco 14K Gold Sugar Loaf Sapphire Glass Natural Seed Pearl Filigree Ring. This wonderful ring is crafted from 14K white and yellow gold, hallmarked 14K. The unique ring features one sugar loaf cut glass gemstone, 45 natural seed pearls, Art Deco era styling, and quality craftsmanship. This wonderful ring is comprised of a beautiful royal blue glass gemstone, framed by a lustrous silvery/white seed pearl surround. The pearl surround is hand-wired securely, and adds a wonderful contrast to blue gem. The hand-wiring of gems is an ancient technique in jewelry making, which dates back thousands of years ago. The decorative corner components are engraved and crafted in yellow gold, whilst the rest of the ring is crafted in white gold. The white gold portion of the ring showcases beautiful filigree work, which leads down to filigree shoulders and delicate engraved decoration. The shank is smooth and polished which allows for a comfortable fit, and easy sizing. This gorgeous Art Deco period ring would make a very special addition to any antique jewelry collection.

Note: Contemporary appraisals do not reflect the value of antique jewelry. It is recommended that this ring be insured for $2000.00 (Tax Excluded)

History: Archaeological research now places the first evidence of true glass there at around 2500 B.C. At first it was used for beads, seals, and architectural decoration. Some 1,000 years elapsed before glass vessels are known to have been produced.

The Romans used glass extensively to imitate precious stones such as emerald, sardonyx, and amethyst, since glass was much easier to carve and the glassmaker had full control over colors and patterns.

Pearls were presented as gifts to Chinese royalty as early as 2300 BC, while in ancient Rome, pearl jewellery was considered the ultimate status symbol. So precious were the spherical gems that in the 1st century BC, Julius Caesar passed a law limiting the wearing of pearls only to the ruling classes.

At first glance, the sugarloaf stone looks particularly similar to the classic cabochon. However, the emergence of this cut to have a 4-sided pyramid shape and high-domed unfaceted polish means that this variation on the classic round or oval cabochon allows for more depth and light to penetrate the stone.

The word "filigree" comes from the Latin words "filum," meaning "thread," and "granum," meaning "grain." Filigree jewellery has been made for centuries, and its history can be traced back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The earliest known examples of filigree jewellery date back to the Middle East around 3,000 BC.

Art Deco was an international decorative style than ran from 1919 to 1939. Known initially as "le style moderne" or "Jazz Moderne," the style received its current name in 1968, during a period of scholarly reappraisal.
