From Times Past - Vintage 'Birks' Swiss Gold Plated Engraved Pendant Watch & Chain. This charming pendant watch is crafted from gold plating over a base metal. The chain is 14K gold filled, hallmarked 1/20 14K GF. The pendant features a Birks Swiss movement, vintage Victorian Revival styling, and quality craftsmanship. This darling pendant watch has a gold case, and a glass face, which protects the Swiss movement watch. The face of the watch is white with black Roman numerals and hands. The watch is signed BIRKS, QUARTZ,  SWISS MADE.  The back of the watch is beautifully engraved with an exquisite floral and foliage pattern, The pendant has an ornate bale, which resembles some of the pocket/pendant watches seen in the Georgian, Victorian era. The watch has been matched ups to an antique style belcher chain, which looks wonderful with the precious pendant watch. This vintage time piece would make a wonderful gift or addition to your vintage jewelry collection.

History: With an investment of C$3000, Birks opened his own small jewellery shop in 1879 on Saint James Street in the heart of Montreal's financial and commercial district. In 1893, Birks went into partnership with his three sons (William, John and Gerald), and the name of the firm became Henry Birks and Sons.

The pendant watch has its roots in the 17th century — and has sparked several waves of popularity over the years, including the belle époque of the 19th century, the Art Nouveau period of the early 20th century and the 1970s.

The technology behind gold plated jewelry is credited to Italian chemist Luigi Brugnatelli. In 1805, he discovered the process for electroplating. It was quickly adopted for jewelry styles, with many Victorian jewelry pieces using gold plating.
