Flower Garden - Estate Sterling Silver Sapphire & Pearl Filigree Pendant And Chain. This exquisite pendant is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 for sterling. Featuring one genuine sapphire, four genuine pearls, Edwardian Revival styling, and quality craftsmanship. The lovely pendant showcases a beautiful deep blue sapphire in the centre of the gallery. The precious gem is surround by 4 silvery grey pearls, and a sea of filigree. The bale is decorated with pretty engravings, and large enough for the substantial chain to slide through smoothly. The chain is a fancy anchor style, which matches the pendant perfectly. The chain enhances the pearl and the detail on the pendant beautifully. The celestial blue color of this gemstone symbolized heaven and attracted divine favor and wise judgment. Greeks wore sapphire for guidance when seeking answers from the oracle. Buddhists believed that it brought spiritual enlightenment, and Hindus used it during worship.

Pearls were presented as gifts to Chinese royalty as early as 2300 BC, while in ancient Rome, pearl jewellery was considered the ultimate status symbol. So precious were the spherical gems that in the 1st century BC, Julius Caesar passed a law limiting the wearing of pearls only to the ruling classes.

The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.

The sterling alloy originated in continental Europe and was being used for commerce as early as the 12th century in the area that is now northern Germany. A piece of sterling silver dating from Henry II's reign was used as a standard in the Trial of the Pyx until it was deposited at the Royal Mint in 1843.
