1902 Treasure - Edwardian English 22K/10K Gold 1/2 Sovereign Dated '1902' Gents Coin Ring.  This gorgeous ring is crafted from 22K gold (coin) and 10K gold (ring setting, tested. Featuring a genuine Edwardian 1902 coin, classic styling, and quality craftsmanship. This fantastic ring is expertly bezel set with a beautiful Edwardian VII 22K gold 1/2 sovereign coin, which still has its crisp 'striking 'of Saint George slaying a dragon. The back of the ring is open, which allows the owner to see the the back of the coin, which is the ruler of the time in England, (King Edward VII). The ring is substantial and solid, with an aged patina. The ring has a polished finish, and a smooth plain shank, which allows for a comfortable fit and easy sizing. This Edwardian era coin is dated 1902, however the ring was made circa 1940.  On a personal note, I remember my grandfather wearing a coin ring most of his life, so I must say that I have always been really taken by these gents coin rings. This is truly a wonderful addition to any gentleman's fine antique jewelry collection.

History: Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

The practice of setting coins as jewels, known as 'Gemme Numari' - coin gems or nummary gems - traces back to Ancient Rome. As people journeyed the world, the coins acquired from their travels made for wonderful souvenirs that could then be engraved and set to be worn as necklaces and rings.

In the United Kingdom, the Edwardian era spanned the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, and is sometimes extended to the start of the First World War. The death of Queen Victoria in January 1901 marked the end of the Victorian era.
