The Origins Of Black Opals: Where They Are From, How They Form. Black opals are exceptionally rare in that they are known to form in only one place: Australia. In fact, most of the opals found on the continent are from the town of Lightning Ridge.

The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.

The Asscher cut was invented in 1902 by Joseph Asscherwho received a patent for the cut, protecting it up until WWII. In 1903, Joseph's son, Abraham Asscher cuts the world's largest diamond at the time, The Excelsior, into ten stones.

Although the modern history of platinum only begins in the 18th century, platinum has been found in objects dating from 700 BC, in particular the famous Casket of Thebes (see image). ... The Spanish called this metal Platina, a diminutive of Plata, the Spanish word for silver.
