History: It is separated from other elements by different processes. There are no records of who discovered silver. However, many ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans managed to obtain it and used it in jewelry, household items, and weapons. Now, silver has many more applications.

The term sterling silver denotes any silver alloy in which pure silver makes up at least 92.5 percent of the content. One theory is that the word sterling comes from the name Easterlings—coiners from east German states brought to England during the reign of Henry II (1154–89) to improve the quality of the coinage.

The first fossil instances of filigree were discovered by archaeologists in ancient Greece and Mesopotamia and dated over 5,000 years ago. The name filigree comes from the latin words “filum” meaning thread and “granum” meaning grain, describing the thin metal strips used to create filigree.

Though the Birks' roots lie deep in English craftsmanship, it truly came to life when Henry Birks opened a first boutique in the heart of Montreal in 1879. His lifelong dream became a reality, and it grew into a magnificent fine jewellery legacy.
