History: Chalcedony was a treasured gemstone of the ancient world. No important Roman was without a seal, amulet or signet ring carved from this fine, durable material. The Victorians, too, chose chalcedony for carved cameos and intaglios; its fine texture allows for intricate craftsmanship.
The name Marcasite in jewellery terms comes from the Arabic word for Pyrite, which is 'Markaschatsa'. Marcasite jewellery has been made since the time of the Incas and the Ancient Greeks. Cleopatra was reported to wear Marcasite in order to preserve her beauty.
Slag heaps near ancient mine workings in Turkey and Greece prove that silver mining started around 3000 BC. The metal was refined by cupellation, a process invented by the Chaldeans, who lived in what is now southern Iraq.
