These wonderful earrings are crafted from rhodium plate over metal, patent # 156452.  Featuring 20 round cut Austrian crystals, vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. These gorgeous earrings showcase 3 rows of expertly claw-set crystal gemstones. The earrings have substantial clip-on backs, which are for pierced or non pierced ears. The clips also have a patent number on the back of the earrings, These vintage earrings would make perfect bridal or special occasion earrings. So classy and elegant!

History: Originally, rhinestones were rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine, hence the name, although some were also found in areas like the Alps (the source of the Rhine). Today the name "rhinestone" applies only to varieties of lead glass known as crystal glass.

In the world of jewellery the phrase diamante generally refers to glittering stones that resemble diamonds. Originally these gems were made from rock crystal however since the 19th century these gems were usually made from crystal or glass..

 Rhodium has been used as a coating for jewelry and silverware since the 1930s. It was also used as a plating for cigarette lighters and writing instruments during that time. One of the many companies that used rhodium plating was the Ronson Lighter Company, which produced many art-deco style items in the 30s.

The first clip-ons, designed for elegant Victorian ladies who considered it a disgrace to poke holes in oneself (see our blog, 'Earrings: A Fashion That's Endured For Millennia'), were a simple screw-back fastening patented around 1894.

As this invention became more established it was observed that clip-on earrings could accommodate everyone and thus they became highly popular and available in all styles/shops.
