History: Crystals haven't always been used in jewelry design. In fact, many of the original jewelry pieces dating back to ancient times were actual gemstones, like emeralds and topaz and were only worn by the wealthy, as all the "common people" could not afford these pieces. That's where our history of crystals in jewelry begins.

The crystals that are often used in higher end costume jewelry are Swarovski crystals, which were first created in the late 1800's. The idea behind the vision was to make "a diamond for everyone" and they came up with crystals, which were affordable alternatives that look just as beautiful as diamonds. The best part is that anyone could buy these options, and have stunning jewelry that before wasn't accessible to the middle and lower class, and was instead still reserved for the wealthy. Still, it wasn't until the 1970's that Swarovski entered the jewelry market in the United States, and started offering some of the products that you'll find in collections.

Once Swarovski entered the market, things shifted and everyone began to have access to more affordable jewelry pieces that looked like the real deal, but at a fraction of the cost of a real gemstone. Crystals are made by firing a combination of natural minerals and quartz sand. The combination is then cooled slowly to avoid stress and inclusions, thus producing perfectly brilliant clear crystals. As with any crystal jewelry collection, color can be added in to give even more options. Most high end crystal pieces are made with Swarovski crystals, they have been known to make the finest crystal in the world. What makes them different is that they were one of the first, and they have upheld their standards of high-quality in the process and manufacturing of their crystals.

Crystals are a beautiful addition to a variety of jewelry pieces and make wonderful wedding jewelry pieces.

The term sterling silver denotes any silver alloy in which pure silver makes up at least 92.5 percent of the content. One theory is that the word sterling comes from the name Easterlings—coiners from east German states brought to England during the reign of Henry II (1154–89) to improve the quality of the coinage.
