Ballroom Glitz - Vintage Gold & Rhodium Plated Rhinestone Crystal Disco Ball Pendant & Chain. This vintage pendant and chain is crafted from gold and rhodium plate over metal. The pendant features numerous round cut faceted crystal rhinestones, vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. This necklace is comprised of a wonderful substantial chain, and a beautiful sparkling crystal rhinestone disco ball. The chain features a secure lobster-claw clasp, in perfect working order. The crystal ball is removable from chain, so the chain can be worn on its own or with other pendants. This vintage necklace would make a great addition to any vintage costume jewelry collection.

History: Centuries ago, quartz pebbles with a high lead content were found sparkling on the banks of Europe's Rhine River. These beautiful, natural stones were highly coveted and were eventually depleted, inspiring jewelers to create an imitation, aptly named the "rhinestone."

The process was invented in 1805 by Italian chemist Luigi Brugnatelli who plated a very thin gold layer on top of silver. Since then, it has become commonplace in the jewelry world, with many base metals covered in gold, silver, or rhodium.
