Rarities Antique Jewelry
Colour Your World - Estate Sterling Silver Opal Filigree pendant & Chain. This lovely pendant and chain are crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 for sterling. Featuring one tear-drop opal (lab created), 3 round cut opals (lab created), Edwardian revival styling, and quality craftsmanship. Featuring an expertly bezel set tear-drop opal with a wonderful play of colour, the setting is shield shaped with amazing delicate filigree work. There are also 3 other accent opals in the setting, adding an additional glow to the pendant. The Bale is bolder than the delicate filigree work, however they work perfectly with the central decoration surrounding the smaller opals. This gorgeous estate pendant has been matched up to a contemporary chain, a perfect match to the piece. Edwardian revival in style, this truly would make a wonderful gift or addition to any jewelry collection.
History: The discovery of the ordered sphere structure of precious opal led to its synthesis by Pierre Gilson in 1974. The resulting material is distinguishable from natural opal by its regularity; under magnification, the patches of color are seen to be arranged in a "lizard skin" or "chicken wire" pattern.
Silver was discovered after gold and copper about 4000 bce, when it was used in jewelry and as a medium of exchange. The earliest known workings of significant size were those of the pre-Hittites of Cappadocia in eastern Anatolia.
Sterling silver was first used in the 12th century in Germany, where the concept of using an alloy to make silver more durable originated. It was later introduced in England in the 13th century, where it became the standard for silver objects.
