Light Show - Victorian Scottish 9K Rose Gold Natural Opal Filigree Coronet Ring. This rare ring is crafted from 9K rose gold, hallmarked 375 for 9K gold, Glasgow assay, and a letter date D for the year 1900. The ring features a natural oval cut opal cabochon, Victorian era styling, and high quality craftsmanship. The gallery on this ring showcases a beautiful Australian white opal, displaying an array of colors in different light intensities. The gallery is made in the form of a coronet, which is beautifully detailed, and holds the precious opal with 8 delicate, yet sturdy claws. The shoulders showcase exquisite filigree work, which is also seen on the gallery. The shank is smooth and polished, which allows for a comfortable fit, and easy sizing. This Victorian era ring has its full crisp hallmarks, truly such a special jewel to be cherished for many years to come.

Note: The Glasgow assay office closed in 1964, so not many pieces are seen from Glasgow. This ring is a rarity.

Contemporary appraisals do not reflect the value of antique jewelry. We recommend that this 9K rose gold opal ring be insured for 1800.00 (Tax Excluded)

History: The early Greeks believed the opal bestowed powers of foresight and prophecy upon its owner, while in Arabian folklore, it is said that the stone fell from heaven in flashes of lightning. To the Romans, it was considered to be a token of hope and purity. Ancient Romans provided the first real market for opal.

Australian opals discovered during the late 1800'sfound little favour with European markets but their commercial value increased in the 1900's and in 1932 Australia took over as the major producer of opals in the world and remains the largest producer to this day.

Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

Rose gold was first used in early 19th century Russia by the famed jeweler Carl Faberge in his famous Faberge Eggs, as was known as Russian Gold. Rose gold later gained popularity in the United States during the lavish and feminine 1920's, and was worn in engagement rings and fine jewelry.

In the history of the United Kingdom and the British Empire, the Victorian era was the reign of Queen Victoria, from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901. Slightly different definitions are sometimes used.
