Birks - Edwardian Sterling Silver Paste Filigree Pin Brooch. This early Birks brooch is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked Sterling, and the Birks two lion maker mark. Featuring round cut paste gemstones, Edwardian era styling, and quality craftsmanship. This gallery on this brooch is adorned with hand-set glowing clear paste gemstones. The gemstones are surrounded by beautiful filigree hearts and milgrain detail (a characteristic of Edwardian jewelry). The back of the brooch features a pin, and 'C' hook lock system (a characteristic of early jewelry), which is in perfect working order, therefore it locks in place securely. The Edwardian brooch is delicate, yet sturdy enough for daily wear. Truly a feminine versatile piece to be enjoyed for many years to come.
History: Paste jewellery dates back to France during the 18th century when a jeweller named Georges Frederic Stras began hand crafting fine-quality Paste jewellery in 1724. He was quickly then appointed as “Jeweller to the King”, and began making Paste jewellery for King Louis XV of France.
In Ancient Egypt, silver jewellery was reserved for kings, queens, pharaohs and select others. Similarly, silver was almost exclusively used in jewellery belonging to the wealthiest men and women in the Ancient Greek period, despite the metal being used to produce currency circulated throughout society at the time.
The term "sterling silver" probably originated in eastern Germany when five towns formed the Hanseatic League in the 1100s. These town minted their own coins of 92.5 percent silver. When Britain sold cattle and grain to the League, they were paid in "Easterling coins".
With an investment of C$3000, Birks opened his own small jewellery shop in 1879 on Saint James Street in the heart of Montreal's financial and commercial district. In 1893, Birks went into partnership with his three sons (William, John and Gerald), and the name of the firm became Henry Birks and Sons.
