Color Change - Estate Sterling Silver Alexandrite Flower & Vine Filigree Ring. This beautiful ring is made of sterling silver, hallmarked 925, for sterling silver. Featuring a round cut faceted alexandrite gemstone (Simulated), and beautiful silver work. The expertly claw set alexandrite is purple in color, with a fantastic change of color, to blue, in different light intensities. The silver work on this ring is lovely, it is a substantial ring, heavier than most contemporary designs. However beautifully detailed , displaying flowers, eaves, vines and scrolls. The scroll work extends down the shoulders of the ring , giving the ring a beautiful detailed profile on the sides. The shank is smooth and polished, which allows for a comfortable fit and easy sizing. This Estate ring has an Edwardian feel, it would make a perfect gift or wonderful addition to any jewellery collection.
Alexandrite is renowned for its color change from red under incandescent light, to green in daylight or fluorescent light. Alexandrite was discovered in 1830 in the Ural Mountains of Russia and named after Csar Alexander II.
Since the 1960s, labs have grown synthetic alexandrite—not to be confused with simulated alexandrite, which is actually corundum or colored crystals infused with chromium or vanadium for color. Creating synthetic alexandrite is an expensive process, so even lab-grown gemstones can be expensive.
Silver's history is long. The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
The term "sterling silver" probably originated in eastern Germany when five towns formed the Hanseatic League in the 1100s. These town minted their own coins of 92.5 percent silver. When Britain sold cattle and grain to the League, they were paid in "Easterling coins".
