Colour Cascade - Art Deco Sterling Silver, Gold GF Natural Opal Ring. This special ring is crafted from sterling silver, and 10K Gold Fill, hallmarked. Featuring one natural cabochon opal, exquisite detail and engravings, quality craftsmanship, and Art Deco styling. The expertly bezel set opal is large, and displays an array of colours in different light intensities. The gallery has a lovely decorated border, whilst the shoulders are gold bows and delicate engravings. The shank is smooth and polished, which allows for a comfortable fit and easy sizing. This Art Deco era ring is unique and oh so special, usually seen in this style with agate gems, however a natural opal is a rarity indeed!
Note: Contemporary appraisals do not reflect the antique value. The opal has been confirmed as being an earth mined natural opal by a graduate gemologist .
It is sometimes difficult to capture the colour play that opals have in photography. The photographs that show the fire orange warm colour is back lit with light. For the more natural colour of this opal look at the hand-shots. There are colours of blue, green, orange and yellow in this opal.
Dating back to about 4000 B.C., they most likely came from Ethiopia. Historically, opal discoveries and mining progressed similarly to the ways diamond, emerald, ruby and sapphire were produced. As early humans found various gemstones, they slowly learned to work them into decorative shapes.
Silver's history is long. The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
Gold was first discovered as shining, yellow nuggets. “Gold is where you find it,” so the saying goes, and gold was first discovered in its natural state, in streams all over the world. No doubt it was the first metal known to early hominids. Gold became a part of every human culture.
