Discovery - Estate Edwardian Revival Sterling Silver Opal Trio Engraved Filigree Ring.  This gorgeous ring is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked SS925, for sterling silver. The ring features 3 oval opal (Lab Created) cabochons, Edwardian revival styling, and quality craftsmanship. The gallery on this ring is expertly set with 3 beautiful white opals , displaying an array of colours in different light intensities. The stunning opals are surrounded by a sea of filigree, which adds character, and beauty to the piece. The shoulders are deeply engraved with flowers and foliage decoration, which leads to a polished and smooth shank. This allows for a comfortable fit and easy sizing. This estate Edwardian revival ring would make a wonderful addition to any jewelry collection.

Comments: Gorgeous design, with a wonderful play of colour.

History: Archaeological evidence suggests that Opal was first mined in Virgin Valley, North America, over 10,000 years ago and used in artefacts in Kenya 6 thousand years ago. Additionally history also suggests that the Aztecs were mining opal in South and Central America around the same time.

The discovery of the ordered sphere structure of precious opal led to its synthesis by Pierre Gilson in 1974. The resulting material is distinguishable from natural opal by its regularity; under magnification, the patches of color are seen to be arranged in a "lizard skin" or "chicken wire" pattern.

Silver was discovered after gold and copper about 4000 bce, when it was used in jewelry and as a medium of exchange. The earliest known workings of significant size were those of the pre-Hittites of Cappadocia in eastern Anatolia.

Sterling silver was first used in the 12th century in Germany, where the concept of using an alloy to make silver more durable originated. It was later introduced in England in the 13th century, where it became the standard for silver objects.
