History: Emerald gemstones were mined in Egypt as early as 330 BC, but some estimate that the oldest emeralds are 2.97 billion years old. Cleopatra is perhaps the most famous historical figure to cherish emerald gemstones.

Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

Filigree, an ancient metalwork art form using fine wires and granules, originated over 5000 years ago in Mesopotamia and Ancient Greece, with artifacts dating back to 3.000 B.C. The word "filigree" comes from the Latin for "thread" and "grain". The technique spread globally, becoming prominent in the Roman Empire, Asia (especially India), and later in Europe, with significant developments during the Edwardian era and Art Deco period using platinum. Today, while die-casting machines have increased production, the art continues to be celebrated for its intricate, handcrafted beauty, especially in regions like India and Portugal.

The Edwardian era corresponds to the reign of King Edward VII in Great Britain, whose short-lived governance (1901-1910) followed Victoria's long reign and preceded the modern House of Windsor in England. The "Edwardian" style broadly encompasses the years of 1901 through to 1919.
