History: Emerald gemstones were mined in Egypt as early as 330 BC, but some estimate that the oldest emeralds are 2.97 billion years old. Cleopatra is perhaps the most famous historical figure to cherish emerald gemstones. She even claimed ownership of all emerald mines in Egypt during her reign.
Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
White gold has been around since the turn of the 19th century, but it wasn't until the 1920s when it really started gaining popularity. At the time, platinum had been the preferred precious metal for jewellery. But it quickly became scarce as World War II raged on, and countries began to stockpile it for military use.
Midcentury modern design is rooted in functionality, clean lines, and simplicity, which reflected the world at that time.
How to care for natural emeralds. The best way to clean emerald jewelry is with warm soapy water or a warm soapy cloth. Do not soak emeralds in soapy water and avoid harsh detergents that might dilute or remove oils from the stone. Never soak emeralds in solvents such as alcohol, acetone, or paint thinner.
Short-term water exposure is generally safe; however, the treatments used on many emeralds can make them more vulnerable. Prolonged moisture and sudden temperature shifts can risk damaging these stones. It's best to avoid exposure during activities like swimming or showering.
