History: The term "rhinestone" originates from the Rhine River, which flows through several European countries. In the early days, naturally occurring rock crystals were collected from the river's banks. These crystals, resembling diamonds in their raw form, were initially the only source of rhinestones. Today the name "rhinestone" applies only to varieties of lead glass known as crystal glass.

The form was first seen in ancient Egypt but also appears in tribal adornment, often in leather decorated with small beads or cowrie shells.
