Flutter - Vintage Silver Plated Simulated Abalone Butterfly Pendant & Sterling Silver Chain. This pretty pendant is silver plated over copper. The chain is sterling silver, hallmarked 925, and Italy. The pendant features simulated abalone technique, and vintage styling. This pendant is made in the form of a butterfly, which displays beautiful abalone (simulated) wings, in blue, turquoise, and green. The back of the pendant has a silver texturized finish. The bale is substantial, and solid, with a high polish finish. The chain is a box design, featuring a secure lobster claw clasp, which is in perfect working order. This vintage pendant would make a great addition to any vintage jewelry collection:

History: Abalone(simulated or faux) refers to a synthetic material designed to mimic the iridescent, pearlescent appearance of natural abalone shell for use in jewelry, crafting, and decorative arts. Historically, this imitation evolved from the early 20th century plastic alternatives to modern, eco-friendly resin, and polymer clay designs driven by the scarcity of the real mollusk.

The story of silver mining began about 5,000 years ago. Silver was first mined around 3,000 BCE in Anatolia, now located in modern-day Turkey. The precious metal helped early civilizations in the Near East, Ancient Greece to flourish.

The term sterling silver denotes any silver alloy in which pure silver makes up at least 92.5 percent of the content. One theory is that the word sterling comes from the name Easterlings—coiners from east German states brought to England during the reign of Henry II (1154–89) to improve the quality of the coinage.

Silver plate, or the coating of a base metal with silver, originated with the invention of Sheffield plate in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, who fused silver to copper for a durable, affordable alternative to sterling. This "fusion plate" dominated until the 1840s, when electroplating, developed by George Elkington, allowed for mass production and the use of nickel silver bases, changing the industry forever.
