Georgian Grandeur - Georgian Rare English Silver Fine Cut Steel Bracelet. This rare bracelet is crafted from cut steel. Featuring silver, cut steel, Georgian era styling, and high quality craftsmanship. A careful look at the intricacy of this cut steel bracelet makes us aware that the manufacture of cut steel jewelry was difficult and had to be very time consuming. The steel studs had to be hand faceted and polished, and then riveted one at a time through the holes in the base (silver) one at a time. The idea was to catch as much light , and therefore create the most sparkle as possible.
Although cut steel pieces were not signed, the quality of workmanship could be recognized by the denseness of the riveted studs and the brightness they exhibit. The earliest examples were buckles that were stylish at the time. Later examples, both French and English, were designed to create the sparkle of diamonds without the cost. The popularity of cut steel jewelry declined later in the 1800s. However, some outstanding examples can be found today.
The bracelet is especially fine because of the quality of the workmanship, and that it is free of rust. Rust reduces the value of cut steel pieces, and is almost impossible to remove. This fine example of Georgian era jewelry would make a wonderful addition to any antique jewelry collection. Truly an exceptional piece!
History: Cut steel jewelry was at the height of fashion from the mid 1700s well into the 19th century. This glittering jewelry innovation originated in the 1700s. To make cut steel, melted horseshoe nails were formed into tiny faceted beads. Those small steel gemstone-like studs were then riveted one-by-one onto a base plate.
