History: The first known emerald mines were in Egypt, dating from at least 330 BC into the 1700s. ... Emeralds from what is now Colombia were part of the plunder when sixteenth-century Spanish explorers invaded the New World. The Incas had already been using emeralds in their jewelry and religious ceremonies for 500 years.Greek miners were working the mines in the time of Alexander the Great, and later the mines yielded their gems to Cleopatra. Emeralds were one of Cleopatra's favourite gemstones. This is known because it was documented.
The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.
Roman fishermen called the gemstone “water of the sea” and used it as protection, for safe travel by boat, and for luck in catching fish. Aquamarine was linked to the apostle St. Thomas who frequently traveled by boat. The year was 1723, and by the end of the 18th century, large deposits were being mined and sent to Western Europe.
Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
