Jeweled Butterfly - Estate Glacier Stainless Steel Abalone Shell Butterfly Pendant & Chain. This pretty pendant is crafted from stainless steel. The pendant features genuine abalone, vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. This pendant is made in the form of a butterfly, which is expertly set with beautiful abalone, displaying a variation of colors. The butterfly is matched up with a silver chain, which is original to the piece. The chain features a spring ring clasp, which is in perfect working order. The estate pendant would make a perfect gift or addition to any vintage jewelry collection.
History: The earliest users of abalone were the Native Americans who left the earliest middens (piles of abalone shells) about 12,000 years ago. Many Native American tribes, including the Chumash, the Valley Yahi, the Hupa, the Yokuts, the Ohlone, and the Wiyot tribes valued and utilized abalone.
During these experiments Brearley made several variations of his alloys, ranging from 6% to 15% chromium with differing levels of carbon. On the 13th August 1913 Brearley created a steel with 12.8% chromium and 0.24% carbon, argued to be the first ever stainless steel.
The butterfly has been a symbol of transformation, hope and faith for thousands of years. The butterfly is also a symbol of rebirth, since it goes through so many life cycles -- from larva to caterpillar to chrysallis and finally to a beautiful, flying butterfly.
