The brooch displays nice detailing, and style, with its original pin and rotating lock mechanism. This vintage brooch would make a wonderful addition to any vintage jewelry collection.
History: The early Greeks believed the opal bestowed powers of foresight and prophecy upon its owner, while in Arabian folklore, it is said that the stone fell from heaven in flashes of lightning. To the Romans, it was considered to be a token of hope and purity. Ancient Romans provided the first real market for opal.
Doublets · A black backing which is made of either black industrial glass, black potch (colourless opal), hard plastic, brown ironstone or sometimes vitrolite.
Over time, however, this rolled gold became “filled” with a base metal, such as brass, thus gold filled with brass. The modern gold filled wire and sheet metal technique was discovered in 1817 by John Turner, an Englishman, who patented his discovery.
Gold-filled can last for years as long as it is cared for. The gold layer is thick so gentle rubbing shouldn't wear it out even by the closures. If it does need to be cleaned, use a soft toothbrush and soap to gently clean it.
