Jeweled Whimsey - Estate Silver Toned Crystal Rhinestone Enamel Butterfly & Floral Necklace. This unique necklace is crafted from a silver toned metal. The necklace features round and marquise cut faceted crystal rhinestones, enamel work, and Victorian revival styling. The necklace is comprised of dangling and bezel set crystals, which enhance the beautiful enamel work. The enamel work is two toned, featuring a lovely lavender/ purple color and a cerise pink color. The gallery is decorated with a butterfly, flowers and foliage, which was often seen in Victorian, art Nouveau jewelry. This particular piece also has a silver tassel, which is adorned by a row of deep red crystals. The chain portion of the necklace is adjustable, which allows the necklace to be worn at your desired length. This pretty estate necklace would make a great addition to any jewelry collection.
History: Origins. Originally, rhinestones were rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine, hence the name, although some were also found in areas like the Alps (the source of the Rhine). Today the name "rhinestone" applies only to varieties of lead glass known as crystal glass.
The earliest known enameled pieces have been dated to the 13th century BC, when Mycenaean goldsmiths inlaid enamels into gold rings. Since then, cultures all over the world have incorporated enameling into their art forms.
