History: The enduring charm of the snake can be traced back as early as ancient Greece, where the snake's ability to shed its skin was seen as a regenerative power. It was therefore associated with Aesculapius, the Greek God of Medicine, and used as a symbol for healing, and was often found on bracelets and amulets.
One of the oldest symbols of mythology, the snake represents goodness, wisdom, and eternal love. In contrast a snake symbol can also represent passion and sexual desire. It is this duality that sparks an intrigue in its allure, making it one of the most popular and timeless jewellery motifs.
Snake jewelry gained popularity in the Victorian era after Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with an engagement ring that was made in the likeness of a snake with an emerald set head.
Records suggest that rubies were traded along China's North Silk Road as early as 200 BC. Chinese noblemen adorned their armor with rubies because they believed the gem would grant protection. Burma has been a significant ruby source since at least 600 AD.
Cubic zirconia was first discovered by German mineralogists in 1937. The gemstone was dismissed for years until it was rediscovered by Soviet-era scientists. It was hoped that the stone could be used as a diamond-like, indestructible substance. There were also theories that it may be used in place of rubies in lasers.

The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
The sterling alloy originated in continental Europe and was being used for commerce as early as the 12th century in the area that is now northern Germany. A piece of sterling silver dating from Henry II's reign was used as a standard in the Trial of the Pyx until it was deposited at the Royal Mint in 1843.
