London Blue - Estate Sterling Silver Blue Topaz Ring. This gorgeous Estate ring is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 for sterling. Featuring one genuine natural London blue topaz, a spectacular design and silver work. The lovely ring is expertly claw-set with a London blue topaz, displaying hues of a beautiful bluish/teal colour. There is an endless amount of fancy 'scroll-etched' filigree work, and bead like silver detailing (a characteristic seen in ancient and antique jewelry). The shank is polished and smooth, which allows for a comfortable fit, and easy sizing. Truly a stunning Estate Victorian revival ring that would make a very special gift or wonderful addition to any jewelry collection.
For centuries these stones have been associated with an Egyptian island located in the Red Sea once known as Topazios. Today, Topazios is called St. John's Island. The Old Testament of the Bible mentions topaz, meaning this stone has been precious for ages.
The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
The sterling alloy originated in continental Europe and was being used for commerce as early as the 12th century in the area that is now northern Germany. A piece of sterling silver dating from Henry II's reign was used as a standard in the Trial of the Pyx until it was deposited at the Royal Mint in 1843.
