Loyalty In Vendée - Victorian French Silver Crown & Heart Claddagh Betrothal Ring. This rarity is crafted from 900 silver, tested, hallmarked with French poinçon on the outside of the shank of a crab (French hallmark) and makers mark. Featuring Victorian styling, hand-crafted workmanship and quality silver-work. This wonderful regional transitional silver ring is from the Vendée area of France. Originally a symbol of faith it evolved to become a symbol of love and availability. It was said to have different meanings (similar to the Irish Claddagh ring) depending on how it is worn. If you wore it on your right hand, the crown inwards, you mean that your heart is free. The crown outwards, you signify to the chosen one of your heart that you are free and that love is possible. Worn on the left hand, the crown outwards, your love has been given to another and you are no longer available, literally engaged or married. Although more than 100 years old the ring has no wear at all, just a beautiful aged dark patina from the passing of the years. It is stamped with the French crap hallmark, and a makers mark with a fantastic substantial smooth shank, which allows for a comfortable fit. This special Victorian French Provincial treasure is full of history and sentiment, truly a perfect engagement, wedding ring, gift or addition to any unique jewelry collection.
Note: In the history of the United Kingdom, the Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign, from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901.
The Vendée is a department in western France. It's known for its long coastline and sandy beaches, like those in the towns of Saint-Jean-de-Monts and Les Sables-d'Olonne. The department's islands include Noirmoutier, with a centuries-old castle, and Île d'Yeu, with sand dunes, coves, moorlands and headlands.
