Portrait Of A Goddess - Vintage English Sterling Silver Blue Wedgwood Neoclassical Cameo Pendant & Chain. This lovely pendant is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked SILVER, and tested. The chain is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925, and ITALY. Featuring a genuine oval Wedgwood cameo, classic vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. The beautiful cameo gemstone is expertly collet-set into the pendants oval shaped bezel. The cameo has a lovely Portland blue and white color. It depicts a raised white silhouette of a goddess, playing a harp, and a blue background exposed to the pendants reverse side. There is a pretty silver bead-like border around the entire cameo, which frames the gem perfectly. The pendant has a substantial bale, and it matched up to a sturdy box chain. This wonderful vintage pendant is highly collectible, truly a perfect gift for that special someone or addition to any vintage jewelry collection.

Josiah Wedgwood joined Thomas Whiedon of Fenton in 1753. A well known and well respected potter of the day. On the 1st of May in 1759 he started working on his own and began Wedgwood potter. Classical subjects are seen on jewelry items and repeated over the decades. Wedgwood gems were set into 18K, 9K and sterling silver. This particular example is set in 9K British gold, and is highly collectible for its beauty and antiquity.
Silver was discovered after gold and copper about 4000 bce, when it was used in jewelry and as a medium of exchange. The earliest known workings of significant size were those of the pre-Hittites of Cappadocia in eastern Anatolia.
Sterling silver, a 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper alloy, has a history rooted in 12th century England, initially used for coinage and later becoming popular for jewelry and other ornamental items.
