Niello Treasure -  Medieval 10th -12th Century Black Niello Bronze Ring.  This wonderful ring is crafted from bronze, and Niello.  Featuring a Medieval design, Inlaid black Niello and quality workmanship.  This special ring is in the form of a cross, which is enhanced by beautiful black inlaid niello work. It has a solid back and a plain shank, which allows for a comfortable fit.  Christianity was the prominent religious of choice throughout Europe during the Medieval period, therefore jewelry in the form of crosses, saints or Icons were often displayed.  This unique and beautiful ring would make a perfect gift or addition to any early jewel collection.

History: Christianity is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. It is the world's largest religion, with about 2.4 billion followers.

Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. Some of the earliest uses, from 1-300 AD, seem to be small statuettes and brooches of big cats, where niello is used for the stripes of tigers and the spots on panthers; these were very common in Roman art, as creatures of Bacchus.

In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted from the 5th to the late 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and transitioned into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.
