On This Day In 1939 - Vintage 14K Gold 'Inscribed' Engraved Wedding Band. This exquisite wedding band is crafted from 14K yellow gold, hallmarked 14K, and inscribed D.V.N. - B.J.H. 4-29-39. Featuring a vintage classic design, a full hallmark, an inscription, and quality craftsmanship. There is something very special about these inscribed wedding bands, that seem to give us more of a connection to the original owner. This particular example has fully inscribed initials of the married couple, and the wedding date. From the top of the band the ring is polished and smooth, however the side profile showcases beautiful exquisite engraved detail. Even though the ring has engravings it can be sized by a master goldsmith. This sentimental vintage ring will make you think about who owned it and who's initials are inscribed on the inside of the band, truly a piece to be cherished and loved again for many years to come.
Note: This couple were married in April of 1939, and in September of 1939 Canada declared war on Germany. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King promised that only volunteers would serve overseas. Makes me wonder if this gentleman went to war and had to leave his new bride behind. Hopefully he returned and they had many years of happiness together.
History: Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
