Ocean's Jewel - Vintage Sterling Silver Pearl Dangle Earrings. These wonderful earrings are crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 for sterling. Featuring 2 genuine pearls, Edwardian styling and quality craftsmanship. The pretty earrings are masterfully bezel set with pearls, which are white in colour, displaying silvery overtones. The earrings are for pierced ears, and feature shepherd hook ear wires. These Vintage earrings will compliment any outfit, and can be worn with formal or casual wear. Beautiful and so versatile!

Pearls were presented as gifts to Chinese royalty as early as 2300 BC, while in ancient Rome, pearl jewellery was considered the ultimate status symbol. So precious were the spherical gems that in the 1st century BC, Julius Caesar passed a law limiting the wearing of pearls only to the ruling classes.

Legend has it that, in order to show her wealth and power, Cleopatra VII (69 B.C. - 30 B.C.) made a bet with her lover — the Roman leader Marc Antony — that she could spend 10 million sesterces on one meal. "She ordered the second course to be served.

Silver's history is long. The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
