History: The first discoveries of pink tourmaline were in in Maine in 1822. The Maine deposits usually produced crystals in raspberry pink-red, as well as minty greens. One of the earliest reports of pink tourmaline found in California was in 1890 by Charles Russell Orcutt.
Pink tourmaline can be found throughout the world. Rich deposits have been mined in the United States, Brazil, Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar, Afghanistan, and Namibia. The finest quality stones are found in the Muzo mines of Brazil and in Namibia. Namibian pink tourmaline has a very intense color.
Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
Porter Gulch was founded by Brooke Miler in 2010, the Porter Gulch journey began with the transformation of a simple cabochan setting into a wearable piece of art. Fueled by her passion, Brooke left the corporate world to pursue jewelry design full-time, creating one-of-a-kind pieces that inspire and captivate.
While Porter Gulch has grown and evolved, their mission remains unchanged: their passion lies in the process of creating beautiful jewelry for all of life’s special moments —and everything in between.
The gemstones are carefully hand-selected with uncompromising standards, ensuring unparalleled quality, brilliance, individuality, and a commitment to responsible mining practices. From vibrant sapphires to exquisite diamonds, our ethically sourced gems are expertly crafted into designs by our team of master jewelers in San Francisco.
At Porter Gulch, they believe jewelry should hold emotion, memory, and meaning. Brooke
FOUNDER & DESIGNER
Brooke’s jewelry journey began in 2008 with a love for silversmithing and the art of transforming raw materials into wearable art. At the same time, her fascination with gemstones grew, prompting her to take courses to deepen her expertise. This passion led to the creation of Porter Gulch, where she focuses on sourcing unique, ethically sourced gemstones—especially sapphires.
Recognizing a gap in the market for one-of-a-kind, personal, and timeless rings, Brooke now helps clients craft pieces that are both beautiful and meaningful. Each creation reflects individuality, quality, and the important moments that define us.
