Portrait Of A Lady - Vintage 10K Gold Carved Conch Shell Cameo Ring. This gorgeous ring is crafted from 10K yellow gold, hallmarked 10K, and a makers mark HART -1. Featuring a genuine hand-carved cameo, vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. This lovely ring boasts a beautiful hand-carved cameo of a portrait of a lady. The background of the cameo is a peach color, whilst the lady is ivory-white in color. The cameo would have been hand-carved in Italy, and expertly bezel-set within a decorative gallery. The shoulders have a slight taper, leading down to a smooth and polished shank, which allows for a comfortable fit and easy sizing. This vintage Victorian revival ring would make a perfect gift or addition to any fine jewelry collection.
History: Cameos are often worn as jewelry, but in ancient times were mainly used for signet rings and large earrings, although the largest examples were probably too large for this, and were just admired as objets d'art. Stone cameos of great artistry were made in Greece dating back as far as the 5th century BC.
Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
