Portrait Of A Lady - Vintage Sterling Silver Carved Cameo Shell Ring. This pretty ring is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 for sterling. Featuring a genuine hand-carved cameo, classic styling and quality craftsmanship. The expertly bezel-set cameo displays a beautiful portrait of a lady, with a delicate detailed bezel. The cameo displays a peach and white colour, and is hand-carved from a seashell. The band is smooth and polished, which allows for a comfortable fit, and easy sizing. The Vintage ring exudes femininity, and is made in the Victorian Revival style.
History: While the birthplace of the cameo was nearly 300 years before the birth of Christ in Alexandria, Egypt, cameos owe their origins to ancient carving traditions. As far back as 15,000 BC, petroglyphs — figures carved into rock — were used to record significant events and communicate information.
Silver's history is long. The first evidence of silver mining dates back to 3000 B.C., in Turkey and Greece, according to the RSC. Ancient people even figured out how to refine silver. They heated the silver ore and blew air over it, a process called cupellation.
