History: Black Onyx is the most famous variety of onyx. The stone has a long history of being associated with protective powers across many cultures including Ancient Greeks and Romans, Persian, Chinese and Indian. Throughout history, the stone has not only been used in amulets and jewellery, but also in carved cameos.

Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.

The cameo is the converse of the intaglio, which consists of an incised, or sunken, engraving in the same class of materials. Cameos exist in large numbers from the early Sumerian period (c. 3100 bc) to the decline of Roman civilization, from the Renaissance, and from the Neoclassical period in the 18th century.
